Deadline for submission of abstracts: April 30th, 2025

Research stream – Call for Abstracts

One of the key aims of this symposium is to facilitate networking and knowledge exchange on climate change in Rwanda. The research stream provides a valuable opportunity for researchers to communicate and present their work on climate change in Rwanda, whether ongoing or completed. We encourage all participants to consider submitting an abstract to share their research and insights. The Scientific Committee will review all submitted abstracts and determine the most suitable format for presentation, whether oral or poster.

The committee will provide feedback to the submitters by end of April 2025.

Abstracts shall include:

  • Name of the selected research area

  • Title of the research/presentation

  • Chose format of your preferred presentation: oral or poster

  • Title (Prof, Dr, Eng, Ms, Mr) Surname, first name of the author/presenter

  • Email address

  • Affiliated (research) institution - only state your primary institution for work and/or study

  • Abstract of your research, which also clearly shows the connection to the research area and to Rwanda (max. 250 words).

Access the abstract submission template here: Abstract Submission Template
Send your filled abstract form by now or before April 30th, 2025 to the following email address: climate-rwanda@giz.de

The symposium will focus on the following four research areas:

Research area 1: Measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

This stream focuses on tracking and quantifying the levels of different greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and measures how to reduce GHG emissions in Rwanda. It includes methodological aspects like the use of satellites, ground-based stations, sensors, remote sensing technology or any other technology to measure emissions from various sources and to analyse it. Contributions that address the topic of MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) respectively the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the UNFCC Convention and Paris Agreement are highly appreciated (Preparing for the Enhanced Transparency Framework | UNFCCC[1]). Research on efforts to reduce GHG emissions and to enhance sinks of GHG (Mitigation according to UNFCCC) are alco considered.

Research area 2: Observation and modelling of climate change

This stream targets observing changes in climate patterns, modelling future scenarios, and understanding extreme weather events in Rwanda or the region. It also includes attribution science and studies that focus on determining the extent to which human activities contribute to observed climate change and weather extremes.

Research area 3: Impacts of climate change and risk assessment

This stream addresses the effects of climate change and climate variability on ecosystems, economies, societies, and their components. It also involves assessing the risks posed by these changes to various sectors, e.g. biodiversity, agriculture, health, or infrastructure.

Research area 4: Climate action: Adaptation to the impacts of climate change

This topic focuses on research on actions to adapt to the impacts of climate change in all sectors (e.g., biodiversity, health, agriculture, or infrastructure) and to reduce vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.
